The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
