Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Comeback

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
