Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Leading Derogatory Chants Targeting Manager Wilder
The striker has signed with Sheffield United only seven months following leading disrespectful taunts directed at the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has agreed to a contract joining the Championship strugglers through the winter. Bamford's seven-year career at Elland Road was ended through agreement this past summer.
Among the player's final notable acts while at Leeds included starting offensive chants about Chris Wilder during Leeds' success festivities in April. Now, the former England international is set to play under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss aims to lift his beloved club out of the drop zone.
Previous Conflict Between Bamford and the Manager
The pair had a past prior to Leeds won promotion to the Premier League the previous campaign and United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as “a muppet” back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured automatic promotion while Leeds fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
All appears to have been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost up front and Bamford looking to rejuvenate his playing days.
The song about Wilder went viral in April. An apologetic Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Wilder said back then: “Had a conversation with Patrick recently and I’ve no issue whatsoever with it. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We had a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and had a longer discussion with him and he's a great person, a class act. When I was playing we used to give it and accept it and that’s an integral part of football across all levels, even on a Sunday morning. I've got absolutely no issue. I am cool with the situation and I said that to Patrick.”
Recent Playing Struggles
Bamford made 18 appearances for Leeds in the previous campaign but the ex- Forest, Chelsea FC & Boro player has faced difficulties with injury over the past few seasons.
