Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team

The English team has opted for a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.

Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.

On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.

But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.

In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
