The Duke of York relinquishes his title as the Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
The royal has been under mounting attention over his links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince Andrew is relinquishing his designations, including the Duke of York, he has stated in a own words.

He has been under mounting pressure over his links with disgraced financier Epstein, with demands for the Palace to take action against him.

That now appears to have caused the figure deciding to voluntarily give up his designations and to give up membership of the Garter Order.

In his message he said he continued to "firmly deny the claims against me".

"In discussion with the monarch, and my immediate and wider family, we have decided the persistent claims about me divert from the responsibilities of the monarch and the monarchy," said a message from the royal.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my family and country first.

"I support my resolution five years ago to stand back from official duties.

"With the monarch's consent, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer hold my honor or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously refute the allegations against me."

Prince Andrew has encountered a range of scandals, including a court case he settled with an accuser, inquiries about his finances and his involvement with an accused intelligence operative.

He will stay a member of royalty - but will discontinue to be the York's Duke, a designation bestowed from his parent, the late Queen Elizabeth.

He had already stopped to be a "working royal" and had forfeited the use of his His Royal Highness designation and no longer appeared at public engagements. His role now will be even more lessened.

His ex-wife will be known as Ferguson and no longer York's Duchess, but their children will carry on to have the title of princesses.

He has been under strong attention over his connections with disgraced financier the financier, more in recent times featuring doubts about when he had truly cut off ties.

In his media discussion, he had said that he had severed all ties with Epstein after they had been pictured together in the city in December 2010.

But emails sent in February 2011 later surfaced implying that the prince had privately remained in touch with the financier, such as swapping a communication: "Keep in close touch and we'll meet again soon!"

There had been mounting annoyance in the monarchy at the controversies that remained to plague the figure.

Next week a book released after death by Virginia Giuffre will be issued which is expected to draw further focus on his association with the plaintiff and the financier.
