The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

A Pressing Query: Does the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren’t being guided by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why not reference the classics?

“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
